THE OAKS Camp and Conference Center

THE OAKS Summer Camp Program

For the Ministries

What is THE OAKS? Who runs it?
THE OAKS is World Impact’s West Coast camp, serving the urban and at-risk of California. We have 647 acres of open space nestled in a high mountain valley of the Angeles National Forest.
Our daily schedule is full of wonderful activities and meaningful Bible lessons. In the evenings campers enjoy large group games and our lively fire circle program of skits, worship and inspired teaching.

So who does your camp serve?
THE OAKS serves our four California city ministries which include San Diego, Los Angeles, Fresno, and Oakland.  We also serve other urban churches and inner-city ministries such as the Union Rescue Mission and the Los Angeles Dream Center.  We are glad your church is considering joining in the blessings of our camp ministry this year. We design our programming, lessons and activities with inner-city children and at-risk youth in mind.  At THE OAKS, you are the majority not a minority.

How much will it cost?
The cost for camp is listed in the brochure.  This cost is much less than any camp with such quality programming, staff and facilities specifically for inner-city and at-risk campers.  We suggest that you have your kids pay at least $5-$10 a day.  Asking them for $5 in five periodic installments leading up to camp builds commitment on their part.  You will need to put down 10% of your camper’s cost to reserve your places.

What about the staff?
Two and a half weeks of in-depth preparation is given to our staff including a week in the inner city.  Our staff come out of diverse backgrounds from across the country.  All love Christ and love kids.  Many staff return for several summers and go on to full-time ministry.

What are some of the requirements for participating ministries?

  • Ministries must possess a similar philosophy of ministry, understanding of the Christian faith and be willing to submit to camp leadership and policies during the camp sessions.
  • Ministries must provide one mature adult counselor of the same gender who has a relationship with the kids for every ten kids of that gender.  This policy assures follow up and helps kids feel secure and safe in a new environment.  It also assures a good ratio of staff to campers.  We also provide at least one trained OAKS counselor per cabin.  Please select and train someone who has a heart for the urban poor and who understands some of their challenges.  You may also want to make sure your youth workers follow up and invite them to your regular times of worship, Sunday school and fellowship.
  • These adult counselors MUST attend a mandatory counselor orientation if it is their first time as a volunteer counselor at THE OAKS.  Lunch is provided free of charge.
  • If you are bringing a total of ten or fewer kids, you may bring only one counselor of either gender, but one of each gender is still preferred.
  • Examples:  You want to bring 11 guys and 6 girls, you would need two male and one female counselors.  You want to bring 10 guys and 6 girls.  You need to bring one male and one female counselor.  You want to bring 4 guys and 6 girls.  You may bring only one counselor of either sex, but we would still prefer one counselor of each sex.
  • Ministries are responsible for providing their own transportation to and from the camp and providing any meals required in transit.  Ministries are trusted to provide adequate background checks on their counselors and are responsible for their staff's and/or volunteer's actions.
  • All forms must be filled out completely and returned nine days or more before camp starts for your campers and counselors to participate.  This task will take a lot of time and effort up front, but will save us both from having to sadly refuse a person upon arrival due to incomplete forms.
